Steele’s work as an educational researcher includes their efforts beginning in 2019 as a project director for UC Davis ModLab, where they have led several teams in developing and implementing college curriculum that uses gamemaking exercises to teach topics across a variety of disciplines, including in STEM, the social sciences, and the humanities. Steele calls this approach “Gamemaking in Education” or GME. In 2023, their article discussing this approach was published as “The Maker Turn in Classroom Games: An Articulation of Gamemaking in Education (GME)” in The Proceedings of GENeration Analog: The Tabletop Games and Education Conference 2021 (Carnegie Mellon University’s ETC Press, 2023). Video of a 2021 presentation that discusses some of the ideas explored in the article can be viewed here.
